2/25/2018 0 Comments Etsy shop + Christmas MarketThought it would be nice to share some photographs of a few of the things I have been up to since last summer. Going into my final year of Univerisity hasn't left me much time to keep my blog updated and I have been busy with quite a few projects on the go. Firstly, I officially started up my Etsy shop last summer, selling handmade lino printed cards and gift tags, branding my shop as PrintedbyRachel (please check it out!) Secondly, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a fashion design student (@Catherinerufffash) to create and sell more lino printed products, including makeup bags, notebooks and decorations at the NTU Christmas Market 2017. This was such a great experience with some really positive and helpful feedback from customers for future reference!

My new brief is to design and create a Spring/Summer 2018 interior collection inspired by the coast. I've got a week left to make my collection as well as upholster one of two vintage deckchairs which I painted white over the Easter break (these belonged to my grandparents and have been at the back of out shed for years). Check out my pinterest board for inspiration for this project: 4/23/2017 0 Comments INDIGO SHIBORIOver the Easter break I decided to experiment with some indigo dyeing for my new project which gave some really interesting results!
3/16/2017 0 Comments LIVE PROJECTSo it has been over a week since we finished our live project with the interior company Romo. Our team 'Nexus' (meaning a connection/link) worked extremely hard to create a final collection that was coherent and forward thinking. The team was made up of a weaver (Alice), an embroider (Kirsty) and two printers (Beth and myself).
We wanted the idea of connections and links to come across with the incorporation of geometric patterns focusing on honeycomb shapes in particular. We came up with some wallpaper designs to fit alongside the fabric samples as well as creating embroidered trimmings in different colour ways as well as combing print with woven samples. We presented to the company and had a very positive response to the work we had produced and we were awarded 'Highly Commended Group' and I was chosen for a placement at their design studios. This is such an exciting opportunity to gain experience in the industry and learn some new skills! Here is a selection of my work for the project as well as our final team collection. Hooray for Nexus! 2/28/2017 0 Comments COASTALFresh inspiration! New ideas for my next project exploring coastal landscapes. I want to explore a muted colour palette, with soft greys, blues and pinks with splashes of coral. My initial research looks at artists like Norman Ackroyd, Kurt Jackson, Rob Barnes and textile prints by Rebecca Atwood. Initial images taken at Weybourne, Norfolk. A starting point I've use before, but one that is full of exciting inspiration. I wanted to capture the rugged textures of the weathered ropes and the amazing textures within the cliff face. I was searching for shells and seaweed to collect and draw from at a later date.

I was initially inspired by old photographs of my granny in her garden, often surrounded by flowers and sat on her garden bench. My Granddad still used a camera which took square format images which often came out blurred or imperfect in some way and I just love the nostalgia they evoke. With such a great starting point, I wanted to reflect the concept of memory in my work and took a series of photographs using different methods of obscuring flowers and creating double exposures with my granny's original bench (which we still have in our garden today.) It's interesting to see the benches deterioration over time, a metaphor for memory. Deep purples and vivid greens and yellows were key colours in my developmental work which led to a final paper based collection.
2/21/2017 0 Comments FOSSILISEDMy First project at NTU. I chose Skeletal/fossilised as a concept for my first project at NTU. It had a very autumnal feel, with a very muted colour palette (which evolved over the course of the project). I focused on skeletal and cellular structures from nature as well as the shapes and textures of shells and fossils. The sandy cliffs in Weybourne, Norfolk were a great starting point. I gathered weathered shells which had beautiful rich tones and textural qualities that translated well through knit and embroidery and eventually print. The project became more abstract as it evolved, moving away from the earthy tones to fresher, contemporary colours.
